Bellarmine 30 Day Challenge!

We need your help this school year, and we have an exciting opportunity for your dollars to do even more for the school.

An anonymous donor has challenged the Bellarmine community to a 30 Day Challenge to help make a difference in the lives of our students. This donor will match any contributions received throughout the month of April for the Annual Fund up to $75,000.  Click here to give!

Your support of the 30 Day Challenge directly and immediately benefits our students, programs and facilities. As you may know, tuition covers only a portion of the cost to educate each student.  Your gift, along with others, helps to cover the difference, or margin. This “Margin of Excellence” represents the added elements that truly make a Bellarmine education such a transformational experience.

Please help us rise to the challenge by making your annual gift today! By making a gift today, you are helping to support the excellence in education and overall experience offered by Bellarmine.

And remember, during the month of April, your gift will be matched!

New Pope Brings Light to Jesuit Philosophy

Matt Fish B’97
Seminarian
Special to Bellarmine Today

As a seminarian studying in Rome, I was blessed to be here for the election of Pope Francis. Since then I have continued to feel a great excitement and pride. Now all the world will know what alumni of Jesuit schools throughout the world have long known: the Ignatian charism has so much to offer the Church and the world. And to us alumni, the election of Pope Francis offers a distinct gift: an opportunity to know even better the riches of this charism.

Rome is a place where ecclesial matters are routine; but during a conclave, the city explodes with anticipation. In February, a sleepy rainy city was jolted alive with the news of Pope Benedict's renunciation. Before that announcement seminarians could stroll across St. Peter's piazza in clerical dress unnoticed; the day after we could barely get across from one side to the other between manic journalists and throngs of pilgrims. Every taxi driver, grocer, and café barista had an opinion about who the next Pope could be (they all seemed to think a pope from the United States would be best!). Even in the halls of my own seminary, the Pontifical North American College, after a few days the experience of passing cardinals, journalists, and television news anchors had become commonplace. Once the conclave began, St. Peter's piazza ebbed and flowed from nearly full to overflowing. Each opportunity to wait in St. Peter's piazza with a crowd of nervous thousands to see the smoke appear from the roof of the Sistine chapel was an exercise in the rhythms of expectation: "Surely they won't elect a pope so soon?" you say to a perfect stranger standing next to you. "But the last ballot happened so quick, the smoke came earlier than expected. Perhaps this one will be it!"

Mugleston Moves On

Gwen Camacho, Epicenter Editor

From the Lion

Students may know him as one of the “Physics dudes,” as “Brian,” or as the youngest teacher on our faculty staff. That’s right folks; it’s Brian Mugleston. After graduating from Curtis High School in 2003, Mugleston, the sixth of seven children, pursued an education at Brigham Young University in Utah. He majored in Neuroscience and hoped to pursue medicine. However, in the process of applying to medical school, Mugleston was also planning to formally marry his fiancĂ©, who at the time was active in the army. At the end of the day, Mugleston chose to support his wife’s career goals rather than attending medical school.

In an attempt to find a career besides medicine, Mugleston was at first interested in public school education. Fortunately, however, Mugleston heard about a job opening at Bellarmine Preparatory School from Anita Emery, a board member of the Professional Educators Advisory Board (PEAB) and a teacher here at Bellarmine.
After landing the job as a physics teacher at Bellarmine, Mugleston immediately got to know students through Senior Pilgrimage, RASH and clubs. He has built relationships with faculty, staff, students and his community period.
